5. March 2011

When I left Johannesburg for Europe, I booked a return flight for early December last year. First I postponed it to the end of January 2011 and then once more to the 28th of February 2011 before I finally arrived back to see the plane again after almost a year.

So it was with great anticipation I turned up at mr. Rinkels hangar Ð but I found the plane in a good condition but as I was to find out later, the long time of standing idle had caused some problems. Just before I arrived, Mr. Rinkel had done the annual, and the altimeter and transponder etc. had been checked, so the plane was now ready for another year of flying before the next annual.

I had an offer to get the PFD display updated with the STV system (synthetic vision) by Garmin for about half price, so I decided to get it done. So now my PDF shows, not only heading, speed and altitude etc., but it displays a live picture of the runways and the topography, as it looks out the window in front of me! So on a shitty day with no visibility, and I am about to hit something, I now will have time in advance to get shit scared as well!

After a few days getting the plane ready and installing a tube that I can run the antenna for my HF radio through, I was ready for a test flight. I taxied to the fuel station, but after waiting about 10 minutes behind another plane to get fuel, the attendant told me I had to wait until the next day, as it was past 5 minutes past the closure time!

I decided to do the test flight with the fuel already on the plane Ð but when it came to starting, the battery was dead?

Yesterday I got the battery charged, and I was off on a test flight over Soweto.

All was well, except I thought the tires looked under inflated Ð but Rinkel thought it would make for nice soft landings!

So today I was ready for takeoff with the intention of flying to Oudtshoorn, but first I had a nice breakfast in the clubhouse of the Krugersdorp Flying club.

I stopped in New Tempe, a GA airport just west of Bloemfontein to take fuel. A very nice airport with 2 paved runways.

By now I had decided to go straight to Cape Town . It was Saturday after all, and I thought it would be nice to see a little night life. On the way, I decided not to go to Stellenbosch again, as I thought it would be difficult to get a hire car there on a Saturday evening, so I opted for the international airport instead. I would have to go there anyway in order to pass immigration and customs to fly to Namibia.

100 miles out of Cape Town, I contacted the approach, and I came in for a left base for runway 19, and taxied to taxiway Hotel. Then it was up to myself to decide where to park as everybody had gone home for the weekend. It was a very long walk to the terminal to get a hire car, but I managed and soon I was in the center of Cape Town in a hotel close to Long Street.
