62 Amiens - Odense
26. May 2007
After a night in a hotel close to the Glisy airport in Amiens, it was time for the leg to Odense. The weather was not looking very good, so I was in no hurry to get to the airport, as I expected the mist to clear during the day.
After a walk to the airport I realised, that the tower was unattended today as well - so I had nobody to pay the landing fee to - and I could not get fuel.
But I calculated, that I had enough fuel to reach my destination, and I was able to get on a wireless Internet connection to file a flight plan. At one in the afternoon I was ready to depart - but the weather did not look good. Good enough for IFR, but because I had to get in the air to get a clearance from Lille, I had to depart VFR.
And the weather was very marginal VFR - but I departed runway 12, and called Lille for an IFR clearance. I had to climb to 2000 feet before I could communicate with them, but then I received a clearance and a Squawk code. I was on my way.
Again I climbed to 11.000 feet and got above the weather. It was smooth flying in over Belgium and the Netherlands. Just south of Amsterdam I got a clearance direct to the Alsie VOR in Denmark, and north of Hamburg I got a clearance direct to destination.
With up to 40 kts. of wind directly in the tail, I made quick progress, and at 1600 local time I landed in Odense.
A number of fellow members of Fyens Flyveklub, had come to the airport to welcome me, and the airport had even arranged a fire truck spray on my taxiing onto the apron!
What a nice finish to my trip around the world!
After 4 months of travelling and flying 32.000 NM (or 60.000 km), 285 logged hours with 69 landings in 30 contries, I was back where I started the actual circumnavigation. This is not including the initial trip from the USA.
I would like to thank everybody who has commented on my trip by email, and I hope that it has been interesting to read my homepage.
